The Times campaign: Cities Fit For Cycling

.
Thank you so much for following this link. In tomorrow's paper, The Times will be launching a major cycle safety campaign, calling for a revolution of British streets. They need to be made safer for cyclists and also for the drivers who share the space with them. An increase in awareness and responsibility on all sides, especially from the authorities who could do so much more to help.

After our dear colleague, and one of my best friends, Mary Bowers was very seriously injured (and is still only very slowly recovering) in a bike accident right outside our newsroom in November, we have felt moved to make this as big an issue as possible.

If you are a Tweeter, Facebooker or blogger, please please read our campaign tomorrow morning and post as much as you can about it (under the hashtag #cyclesafe). Tell us where you agree, where you disagree, your own stories of cycling on British streets and read about and sign up to the campaign at a freely accessible link I will post in the morning. The more voices the better.

Help us get it trending, direct people to the sign-up point to support the campaign, and help us present a united front in a call to arms for safer cycling on Britain's streets. The death toll is far too high. Something needs to be done.

Put the article outside The Times paywall or it's effect will be limited.

Agreed inside paywall & impact will be much reduced

Great idea for a campaign...there are many of my yellow shirted brothers and sisters that will support you on this.

The volume of cycles often exceeds motor vehicles in parts of central London during rush hour, yet nothing is done in terms of prioritising the needs of cyclists over those of motor traffic.

With London and other municipal elections coming up, we need to increase pressure on those that seek to represent us.

Most notably, although this is not a party political comment, we need to name and shame the Conservative GLA members who routinely walk out as a group when cycle safety measures are tabled to ensure that a vote cannot be taken. http://tiny.cc/b0nxg

Again, agree it would be nice if News International could drop the paywall around this article....this has the potential for huge support from the community and, dare I say it, add new readers for The Times, but its very difficult to socialise content with a paywall in place

This is brilliant news. It's time we had a national newspaper sticking its neck out for what is right in our cities. Personally I think Copenhagen has a huge amount to offer: it has demonstrated clearly that successful cities can also be liveable and safe for everyone. This is my vision--and cycling is a key element. The campaign should not forget other people to since cycling can provide direct and indirect benefits to local economy and even to pedestrians and disabled people. London needs to drag itself up from a ranking of 40-something to number 1 in the world ranking of Liveable Cities. Copenhagen achieved it in 1999, why can't we achieve it too?

Fully support this, we need streets that ANYONE can cycle on not just those brave enough to take their lives in their hands.

Only yesterday I was working opposite The Times offices on The Highway and winced as I saw a HGV towing a long trailer barely give a cyclists 1/2 a lane of clearance as he stormed on past. It has to stop!

Excellent work by The Times (and it's not often I find myself writing that...), so the best of luck with your campaign!
